Local blasting operation prompts learning about explosives regulation and use

Written by

According to KMUD News Coordinator Terri Klemetson:

Last week, a blasting operation just north of Dean Creek stopped traffic on Highway 101 for about ½ hour, and according to Caltrans Public Information Officer, Scott Burger, the rock clearing operation was engineered to destroy a large rock measuring 12 feet by 10 feet precariously perched above the highway. To detonate the rock, the crew drilled about 10 holes that were 2 ½ inches in diameter, at varying depths into the rock, and then they placed the charges. Caltrans had originally scheduled the blasting operation for 11 am, but because four drill bits broke during the operation the highway did not close until 12:30 pm.

To learn more about explosives regulation and use in California, especially along the highway, Terri Klemetson interviewed Lon Santis, Manager of Technical Services for the Institute of Makers of Explosives, commonly referred to as the IME.   The IME, a non-profit organization founded in 1913, is a safety and security association that works with explosives manufacturers and governments.
