In these days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he (sic) is denied the opportunity of an education. Such an opportunity, where the state has undertaken to provide it, is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms.

Spring Pledge Drive Ends April 30

Thank you so much for your support during Redwood Community Radio's Spring Pledge Drive! The on-air portion officially ended on Friday night without quite reaching the goal of $85,000. Many volunteers came forward and together with staff they kept the drive alive. They did this because they know that the station really needed to bring in the budgeted amount. Well, on Wednesday afternoon at 2:33 pm we met the goal when an angel called in and pledged the remaining fourhundredsome bucks that we still lacked. Thanks to all who participated in this effort!

Did you know that you can renew your membership anytime by mailing your check or money order to KMUD, PO Box 135, Redway, CA 95560. You could also make a donation online here right now, since you're already online...

Felix posted a bunch of photos from the pledge drive in this gallery, check 'em out.

Seems like all the candidates for political office are talking about change. Do you have some you want to get rid of? KMUD will take it! And here's a fun project: If you have a jar of coins, where you put the pocket change you bring home after shopping, and you're curious how much is in there before donating the contents to KMUD, check out coincalc.com. This free calculator will give you an estimate of the total value. Whether you figure out how much is in there or not, we'll gladly take the change and we'll sort it and take it to the bank.

Kate Klein will be missed by many in the community.

Kate Klein

Kate Klein, KMUD’s long-time Music Director and community volunteer, died on Tuesday, April 15, of cancer at the Jerold Phelps Community Hospital in Garberville, surrounded by friends and loved-ones. Kate was one of KMUD’s most-beloved DJ’s, and she was also a popular DJ for parties and events. Her love of music was obvious, and her dedication to KMUD … tremendous. Kate spent countless hours volunteering for fundraisers and benefits. She was extremely committed to her work in radio, but always found time to sing, dance and play. She was a caring person who made many people feel that their thoughts and opinions mattered.

Kate greatly expanded KMUD’s music library over the years, developing one of the most extensive ones around. Her eclectic taste in music was appreciated by those who listened to her show here on KMUD, called KMOOD, which was sprinkled with profound, wise words that raised ones conciousness and spirit. Some of the words friends used to describe Kate include genius, creative, and magical.

A memorial dance is in the works, which will include live music, singing and celebration of the beauty and joy Kate brought. There has also been an account set up to help with the costs of memorial and cremation services. That account is at the Community Credit Union in Garberville, and donations are also accepted at Kidz and More in Garberville.

Kate was a gift to KMUD and our community, and her smile, her words, and Kate herself will be sorely missed. Thank you, Kate, for being a good friend.

The conversation continued on the Friday 7 pm talk show.
A special talk show on the building code, the general plan and the rural home: Fear, talk of conspiracies, and all kinds of rumors abound, but what exactly is happening with the general plan update? What is its relationship to code enforcement activities, and how do citizens help shape the planning process? Martha Spencer of the Planning Department will answer questions and concerns about the plan update process, code compliance and how citizens can get involved. The other guest was Todd Sobolik of the Humboldt County Community Develompent Services Department, and the show was hosted by Liz Davidson and Charley Custer.

If you missed the meeting or the broadcasts you can hear them now in the KMUD Audio Archive. Look for Live Broadcast Public Meeting re: Code Enforcement and Friday Night Talk: Code Enforcement and General Plan.

New on KMUD. And news on KMUD.

A meeting called by the Humboldt Coalition for Property Rights on Wednesday, March 19 drew an overflow crowd to the Healy Senior Center in Redway. These stories are available in our Audio Archive, and you'll also find a recording of the whole meeting of March 19 by following this link to our news section .

The Mendocino Redwood Company held a public meeting in Fortuna on March 15 to present information about their proposed reorganization plan for Pacific Lumber and take questions from the public. An audio recording of that meeting is now available in our News section. A recording of the Eureka meeting is available as well.
