Technical Director
Job Description
Job Title: Technical Director
Reports to: Station Manager
Employment Status: $17.00 to $21.00 per hour based on experience, 20-25 hours per week based on organizational needs.
General Description:
Redwood Community Radio (RCR) is a dynamic community radio station, established 35 years ago and driven by a mission of public service.
The Technical Director will be responsible for Redwood Community Radio studio and transmission site equipment. This includes FM transmitters for KMUD Garberville, KMUE Eureka, translator K258BQ Shelter Cove (these are HD as well), and KLAI Laytonville, as well as streaming and audio networking equipment, office computer network, and phone systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
Manage the design, installation, modification, and repair of the broadcast plant.
Inspections and calibrations of the transmission system, required monitors, metering and control systems and any necessary repairs or adjustments.
Equipment performance measurements or other tests as specified in the rules or terms of the station license.
Review KMUD records at least once each week to determine if required entries are being made correctly. Verifies that the station has been operated within the rules terms of the station licenses. Sign and date the log, make any necessary correction, and advise the station licensee of any recurring problems.
Maintenance and monitoring of the Emergency Alert System..
Maintenance and repair of all broadcast equipment in order to establish the highest quality technical sound and facilities within the confines of budget limits.
Maintenance of transmitter sites. Coordinate with other site tenants as required for tower work, etc.
Maintenance of backup power generators at the studio and the KMUD transmitter site.
Maintenance of computerized automation system
Ensure compliance with all FCC regulations regarding technical operation
Participate in/complete the design, building, and maintenance of on-air studios A and C, talk/performance studio B, and production room D. Keep current with technology advancements and methodologies and seek training and/or consultations whenever possible.
Set up live remote broadcasts and stay on site if necessary. Train others to perform this job.
Be on call 24 hours a day
Oversee office network
Attend staff meetings
Other duties as designated
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
1-2 years experience in repair and maintenance of radio equipment
Ability to provide quick solutions to problems that arise with all related equipment
Knowledge of and experience with studio and transmitter equipment, including HDradio, digital editing.
Computer expertise, using both Macs and PC’s.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as necessary.
Ability to train volunteers
Ability to work effectively with socio-economically, racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse communities
Ability to model respectful, inclusive, responsible behavior that is consistent with RCR’s mission and its written family values
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Introductory period
There is a three-month introductory period. This period is not to be construed as a contract. This means that employment can be terminated with or without cause and with or without notice at any time during or after the introductory period, at the option of the organization or of the employee. The employee shall be evaluated before the end of the introductory period, and within 30 days of the annual anniversary of the employee's hire date. Employees of Redwood Community Radio are reviewed on an ongoing bi-annual basis.
Benefits
This position offers paid vacation, sick leave, an annual personal day and 9 paid holidays per year, in accordance with KMUD Employee Benefits Policy. Due to being part time, this position offers 5 hours of paid time per holiday. KMUD annually observes a 2 percent cost of living annual increase (COLA). The COLA is applied on January 1st of each year.
Working Conditions
RCR has a small paid staff and about 400 volunteers. RCR has regular membership drives. They require a substantial amount of time and coordination. The atmosphere is animated and stimulating. The ability to work in this kind of environment is essential.
Equipment Used & Physical Working Conditions
Computer (Mac & PC), voicemail, and copier Applicant must be able to remain in a stationary position approximately six hours a day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about the inside of the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Applicant must have the ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Drive to transmitter sites, up to two hours away.
Applicant must also be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
