Share the Beach Internship
Friends of the Dunes is working with the Western Snowy Plover Recovery Unit 2 Outreach Committee to hire, train, and supervise Share the Beach Interns. Interns will conduct community outreach about the federally threatened Western Snowy Plover at Big Lagoon State Beach and Mad River County Park on weekends and high use times during the plover breeding season in the summer. Interns will provide information to beach-goers, report on visitor use, and be a positive force in the effort to preserve public access while protecting sensitive species.
The goal of the Share the Beach Campaign is to encourage stewardship of coastal ecosystems by increasing community awareness and appreciation of natural diversity and to encourage recreation practices that protect native species, especially the Western snowy plover. The program is carried out via a media campaign, outreach events, and docent programs at local beaches.
Friends of the Dunes will be hiring 4 Share the Beach Interns from May 15th to August 15th. This is a paid, part-time position. Interns will be expected to work 6-10 hours a week at a rate of $13 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications: Available to work on weekends, excellent communication skills, and enthusiastic learners
Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of beach ecology and shorebirds, coursework or experience in natural resource interpretation, and a passion for coastal ecology
Work Conditions: Interns will be interacting with the public using COVID safe protocols such as mandatory mask-wearing. Interns will be spending 3-5 hours a day outdoors on local beaches in various weather conditions. Interns may be walking on sandy beaches. We can make reasonable accommodations for qualified applicants with limited mobility.
