Community Safety and Awareness Report for Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

•The southbound Route 101 Tompkins Hill off ramp, south of Eureka, will be closed on Thursday, April 14th, and Friday, April 15th, from 9am to 3pm.  Crews will be upgrading and replacing metal beam guard rail.  For updated information call 1-800-GAS-ROAD.

•The U.S. Coast Guard and regional emergency response partners are scheduled to participate in a full-scale mass rescue exercise, today, April 13th, at various locations in Eureka.  Coast Guard Group/Air Station Humboldt Bay will team up with more than 24 state, local, and industry partners to conduct the largest full-scale mass rescue exercise in regional history.  During the exercise, victim actors will be rescued from the water at the scene of the incident, transported to a land triage site, and then transported to regional hospitals for treatment. The American Red Cross will also be exercising their family reception center capability during the exercise.

•April is National Safe Digging Month, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company reminds customers to call 811 before starting any excavation project, large or small.  Whether planting a tree, installing a sprinkler system or building a fence, homeowners and professional excavators need to know where gas and electric lines lie underground to prevent injuries, property damage and outages.
