Join Redwood Region Audubon Society for the monthly Women and Girls Birdwatching series on Sunday, December 4 at 9:00 a.m. Join leader Kathryn Wendel for a trip to the Elk River. Please join the Redwood Region Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count. Orientation will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, at the Masonic Lodge, 251 Bayside Road, Arcata. Sean McAllister, Tony Kurz, and Ken Burton will discuss the Centerville, Arcata, and Tall Trees counts, which they will be leading. They will also provide information on the Del Norte and Willow Creek counts. Hot drinks and goodies will be served at 7 p.m., so bring a mug to enjoy cider, cocoa, or shade-grown coffee. Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, December 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Meet leader Ralph Bucher at the Visitor Center for this two-mile walk along a wide, flat trail that is packed gravel and easily accessible. Join Redwood Region Audubon Society for Beginning Birdwatching & Project FeederWatch at the Jacoby Creek School Garden just north of Jacoby Creek School in Bayside on Saturday, December 17. Drop-in anytime between 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., every 3rd Saturday through April 15, 2023. Everyone is welcome to watch and learn about birds in an informal, family-friendly setting. Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour along the Eureka Waterfront Trail on Sunday, December 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with leader Ralph Bucher. This relatively urban trail offers the potential to observe species abundance and diversity compared to many more remote locations. This walk is on a flat, paved trail that is wheelchair accessible. Join Redwood Region Audubon Society on Saturday, December 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for a Wigi Wetlands Volunteer Workday. Help create bird-friendly native habitats and restore a section of the bay trail by removing invasive plants and trash. The trail section is located behind the Bayshore Mall and volunteers will meet in the parking lot directly behind Walmart. We will provide tools, gloves, and packaged snacks.
