Join Redwood Region Audubon Society for a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday, October 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. October often brings many migrants, including sanderlings, sandpipers, other waders, and ducks! Bring your binoculars and meet trip leader Jim Clark at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata for incredible views of Humboldt Bay, easy-to-walk trails, and a great diversity of birdlife.

Let the Redwood Region Audubon Society and trip leader Janelle Chojnacki spice up your weekday evening with this free guided walk around the Arcata Marsh on Tuesday, October 4 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  We will likely observe many migratory species, including foraging swallows and swifts, warblers, flycatchers, and maybe some raptors getting a last meal before night. Evening walks always carry the possibility of viewing the plethora of night herons taking off from their diurnal roosts and seeing owls out and about! Bring binoculars and a scope if you have one. Meet at the south end of I Street (Klopp Lake). Reservations are not required.

Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, October 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Meet leader Ralph Bucher at the Visitor Center for this special trip celebrating National Wildlife Refuge Week. The four-mile loop walk is on a wide, gravel-packed, and easily accessible trail. The levee north will be open for the day and provides access to the north end of the refuge. We will walk from the Information Center out to the willows to the Hook Bay Slough, proceed on the levee to the north end of the refuge, and return along the tree line. The tides appear helpful. Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour along the Eureka Waterfront Trail on Sunday, October 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with leader Ralph Bucher. This relatively urban trail offers the potential to observe species abundance and diversity compared to many more remote locations. This walk is on a flat, paved trail that is wheelchair accessible. Join Redwood Region Audubon Society on Wednesday, October 19 for a live and virtual presentation entitled “The Path to Sea Otter Reintroduction in Oregon” by Frank Burris of the Elakha Alliance. As a keystone species, sea otters profoundly affect the mix of species around them, including locally breeding seabirds. Burris will discuss Elakha Alliance’s mission to restore a healthy population of sea otters to the Oregon Coast and the research and plans for reintroduction. The program starts at 7 p.m. at the Six Rivers Masonic Lodge, 251 Bayside Road, Arcata. Go to www.rras.org for the program’s zoom link. Hot drinks and goodies will be served at 6:30 p.m. so bring a mug to enjoy shade-grown coffee. Please come fragrance-free.

Bring your binoculars and meet trip leader Larry Karsteadt at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata for incredible views of Humboldt Bay, easy-to-walk trails, and a great diversity of birdlife.

Join Redwood Region Audubon Society for the monthly Women and Girls Birdwatching series on Saturday, October 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This month, we’ll explore both birds and plants! Bring your binoculars and we’ll see which bird species we can find along the Freshwater Creek trail. We’ll then make our way to the California Native Plant Society’s North Coast Chapter’s native plant nursery and demonstration garden. Meet trip leaders Kate Rowe and Barbara Reisman at the Freshwater Farms Reserve trail parking lot, 5851 Myrtle Avenue, Eureka. Reservations are not required.

Join Redwood Region Audubon Society on Saturday, October 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for a Wigi Wetlands Volunteer Workday. Help create bird-friendly native habitats and restore a section of the bay trail by removing invasive plants and trash. The trail section is located behind the Bayshore Mall and volunteers will meet in the parking lot directly behind Walmart. We will provide tools, gloves, and packaged snacks. The Loleta area contains a nice mix of riparian, wetland, pasture, and estuary, resulting in a wide diversity of wildlife. Join the Redwood Region Audubon Society and trip leader Ken Burton for a half-day outing on October 30 in search of waterfowl, shorebirds, waders, raptors, and songbirds. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Eel River Drive and Summer Street in Loleta.
