Three escape head-on collision with minor injuries:
A head on collision occurred yesterday around noon, 4 miles north of Briceland on Ettersberg Road. The drivers were identified as 55-year-old Southern Humboldt resident, Price Lee, and 41-year-old Leggett resident, Kerry Galliven. According to the CHP, the head-on collision resulted in several injuries and the fatality of one of the dogs in Lee’s vehicle. The California Highway Patrol said no charges were filed.
Fire at Tea Garden Apartments found in time to evacuate residents and extinguish fire:
Around 2:30 am, Wed. morning, an Arcata Police Sergeant located a fire underneath a stairwell at the Tea Garden Apartments in the 1100 block of "F" Street in Arcata and promptly notified the Arcata Fire District. The firefighters evacuated the buildings and extinguished the fire. Only one minor injury was reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Anyone having information that may be helpful in this investigation is asked to contact the Arcata Police Department at 707-822-2428 or the Arcata Fire District at 707-825-2000.
HSU students escape fire with minor injuries:
As a result of the fire at the Tea Garden Apartments (see above), ten Humboldt State University students were displaced from their apartments. According to Jerrod Petroske, PIO for Humboldt State University, work is being done to provide temporary housing and assistance to the students. Any student affected by the fire and in need of assistance can contact a special hotline set up at the HSU Office of Student Affairs, (707) 826-4110. Family members of affected HSU students may call the University at (866) 486-2653.
Dem. Senator Mark Leno introduces bill challenging use of fire retardant chemicals:
California has a 1-of-a-kind law requiring fire retardant chemicals in furniture, upholstery and pillows, but the chemicals may be creating health and environmental damage without actually stopping fires. Christopher Martinez reports from Sacramento. Physicians for Social Responsibility is a cosponsor of the bill.
Citizens facing foreclosures say Attorney General needs to punish banks:
The Home Defenders League and other groups, including homeowners throughout the country, will be putting pressure on state Attorney Generals to demand a strong settlement against the big banks involved in causing the foreclosure crisis and widespread mortgage fraud. The event called "National Call-In Day of Action" is expected to generate thousands of calls to AG’s around the country. Peggy Mears, a homeowner currently facing foreclosure, describes actions and protests related to the mortgage crisis.
