According to a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, dated Nov. 2, 2011:
On Nov. 28, 2011, at approximately 8:00 p.m., a citizen contacted the Sheriff’s Office after watching the news and recognizing suspect Chad Macias’ photo on the news. The citizen told the deputy who interviewed him that he picked up Macias hitchhiking on the freeway. Macias asked him if he was traveling north and if he could give him a ride to the animal shelter.  When they arrived at the shelter it was closed. Macias told the citizen he was going to wait at the shelter until it opened to pick up his dogs. The citizen left Macias at the shelter.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. today a deputy traveling through Eureka to the courthouse spotted Macias standing on the street corner at 5th and O Street, Eureka. Macias had the two dogs in his possession. When the deputy asked Macias about the dogs he told the deputy, “They found me, they came to me”.  Macias was arrested for burglary and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. His bail is set at $50,000.00.  His dogs were transported back to the Humboldt County Sheriff Animal Shelter.
