For over 40 years, Redwood Community Radio Inc. has grown from a small grassroots operation into a vital regional media network that continues to embody the values of community, independence, and accessibility. What began as a single transmitter on Pratt Mountain has evolved into a robust, multi-station organization serving a diverse and widespread audience across Northern California bringing music, talk shows, local news, broadcasts and events to Humboldt and beyond. We’ve brought folks together and have created an amazing community of radio lovers, artists, elders, news enthusiasts and collaborations across the globe.
KMUD will face severe difficulty in on going years due to the loss of Corporation for Public Broadcast funding in 2025. Every day it costs $1600 to run the station, that’s $66 every hour, or about $1 per minute! That means one yearly membership covers about 1 hour of programming! We were able to make it through 2026 thanks to grants and 2027 thanks to an auction of coins donated to us. We’ve gotten lucky.
The issue with CPB funding loss is that every new year presents the challenge of being behind on nearly $200,000 in operating costs with no guarantee of securing funds to make up for the loss of CPB funding. Our community is giving everything they can and we are SO THANKFUL!
