Speak Up, Tune In, Take Action with KMUD!  by Kara Randolph, Station Manager

KMUD isn’t just a radio station — it’s a living, breathing part of our community. In a world dominated by corporate media and political agendas, community radio is more vital than ever — and more at risk.

KMUD remains one of the few truly free and local platforms where people like you can stand up for human rights, protect the environment, defend free speech, and share stories that matter to our community.

Here’s how you can help keep KMUD alive and powerful: Call In to Talk Shows: Monday-Friday at 7pm on 707-923-3911. Participate in the on-air conversation, staying on topic and brief. Call In to All Sides Now: Leave your two minute message on 707-932-5276 Stand Up for Change: Use our airwaves to champion justice and sustainability.

Block Party LineUp Reveal

by Dennis Maher, Program Director

We’re beyond proud and excited to unveil the amazing lineup of local talent joining us for this year’s Block Party! There’s truly something for everyone, so come ready to dance, smile, and soak up the good vibes.

Kicking things off at noon, the Garberville Town Band will bring their bold brass energy to the stage. Then, we’ll roll into a fun-filled family-friendly afternoon featuring a puppet show by Cowtown and a kid zone with Ninja games, vinyl painting and other surprises. Add to that, musical performances by Face Urchins, Emily Totten in her new musical project with Damond, and Zera Starchild.

As the afternoon winds down, we’ll ramp things up with high-energy sets from: Ticket to Ride – NorHum based Beatles tribute band Checkered Past – bringing the heat with reggae and ska Hera Has a Heart – with selections from her one-woman rock opera, The Madness Blu Axis – featuring a special performance with the legendary Camo Cowboys! _______________________

Don’t forget — the Block Party is also a fantastic opportunity to support local artists and makers. Craft vendors will be showcasing their unique creations all day long!

KMUD News Updates Thank You, Lisa Music, and Big News from Hoopa! by Lauren Schmitt, News Director

Hi KMUD News supporters!

First, thank you to everyone who donated and became a member during our last membership drive. When our finance department reads the overwhelming support in the donation comments, it reaffirms how vital KMUD News and the programs we offer are—especially during a time when we’re facing ongoing threats of cuts. Please continue to let KMUD management know how much you value KMUD News!

Now, some good and bittersweet news…

Bittersweet news first: Lisa Music will be leaving the KMUD newsroom at the end of this month. But don’t worry—she’s not going far! Lisa has accepted a full-time position with our local news partner, Redheaded Blackbelt (kymkemp.com). While we’ll miss her presence in the newsroom, we’re thrilled that she’ll continue serving our community through journalism, and we’ll still be collaborating regularly on breaking news, emergency alerts, and ongoing coverage.

If you see Lisa around the community, please thank her for her many years of dedicated work with KMUD!

And now the great news: KMUD News has launched a historic partnership with two tribally run media organizations—KIDE (the state’s first Native-owned radio station) and the Two Rivers Tribune—to create a Journalism Club at Hoopa Valley High School!

The Hoopa High Youth News Team launched their first newscast on Tuesday on KMUD, April 8, and we couldn’t be more proud. We’ll be working with the students to produce both print and radio news content for their peers and the broader community. Big thanks to our KIDE partner, Joseph Orozco and Allie Hostler, at Two Rivers Tribune.

Women’s Histories, old and new by Dorothee and Jama

Through the month of March, KMUD women aired 2-3 minute pieces about a woman they admire. Those are all available here.  Then on March 26, BR aired on Women on Wednesday some Women’s History Month pieces that were recorded in 1999 and 2000.  Those pieces are also available there, and here are descriptions of them:
  • Judi Bari announces she has breast cancer to the listeners of her Punch and Judi show on KZYX, with an outro by Katz.  (This audio is from the Who Bombed Judi Bari CD, produced by Darryl Cherney and Penny Andrews, who are both KMUD programmers.)
  • Sister Jane Kelly dedicated her life to serving others — a piece by Tui McCarthy.
  • Malta, a place of veneration of “Mother Goddess” — a piece by Gillian Brown.
  • Peace Pilgrim, who walked over 25,000 miles for world peace — a piece by BR Graham.
  • Mother Teresa‘s “Anyway Poem” — Xeno read this poem, which urges us to “be kind anyway.”
  • Harriet Tubman, “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, guided enslaved people to freedom before the Civil War — a piece by Gidalia Wolf.
  • Eleanor Roosevelt, the conscience of the New Deal – a piece by Katz.
These women’s stories remind us that courage, resilience, and vision can transform the world. Keep celebrating! Keep learning! And keep lifting each other up because history… is still being written!

Lester Leaps In with Katie and Julian

Originally created by the legendary Les Sher, Lester Leaps In is a must-listen jazz show on KMUD every Sunday from 7 to 9PM. For the past few years, Katie Jazz Lady has been keeping the legacy alive in that time slot, with Jordan Jumpshot at times, and now she’s joined by Julian Jackson!

Julian began his KMUD journey as an engineer and Youth in Radio host, and he’s now officially part of the jazz rotation alongside Katie. He is also a co-host on Witnessing the Environmental Apocalypse with Kelley Lincoln and a regular sub for the Phish show.

Fun fact: Katie and Julian are also collaborators in the Random People Theater troupe! The photos shown here were taken during last week’s performance at the Garberville Playhouse. Photos captured, of course, by the amazing Agnes Patak. Moon Boots with Dani and Chelsea Before Lester Leaps In, from 5:30 to 7PM, the slot stayed “undefined” for a few months, and finally found its vibe with a dynamic duo. Chelsea and Dani are taking over, every other week, on Moon Boots. Slide into your Moon Boots and join the ride—these girlz glide from R&B to funk, with sharp turns into alternative pop. Wherever the vibe is fresh and the beats are crisp, they’re already there. Catch the lift!
