SYNOPSIS: A colder, wet storm system is forecast to arrive today, and will bring widespread rainfall, mountain snow above 4500-5000 feet, and the slight potential for thunderstorms over the coastal waters. Light rain showers will be increasing in coverage and intensity through the day. A drying and warming trend is expected to take effect mid week into the weekend.

TODAY: 

Inland: Showers, mainly before 2pm. High near 62. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Along the Coast: Showers likely, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 57. North northwest wind 6 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. 

TONIGHT:  

Inland: A chance of showers before 11pm, then a slight chance of showers after 2am. Areas of fog after 5am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 42. North wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. 

Along the Coast: A 20 percent chance of showers before 8pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 46. North wind 8 to 13 mph becoming light and variable. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph.

Extended Forecast: A storm system with a cold upper trough is moving over Northern California, bringing spotty showers that will become steadier and heavier through tonight and Tuesday. Rain will be locally heavy at times, especially in mountain areas facing the wind, with the possibility of brief, weak thunderstorms near the coast, mainly around Mendocino. Some mountain areas will see snow, particularly above 4,500–6,000 feet, with 2–4 inches expected at Scott Mountain Pass and up to 11 inches in higher spots. Showers will diminish and fog may develop Tuesday night, followed by a drying and warming trend starting midweek, bringing sunnier and more typical October weather later in the week.
