NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE REPORT

Wednesday, January 14th, 2026

SYNOPSIS:

  • High pressure system brings warming and offshore winds, causing cold mornings in valleys but afternoon temperatures reaching low-to-mid 70s in sunny areas Wednesday through Friday
  • Strong northeast winds expected over hills and mountains, especially in Del Norte and Lake counties, due to unusual January warmth
  • Dense, patchy fog possible around Humboldt Bay and coast
  • Poor air quality risk in sheltered valleys where cold air traps smoke and pollution for days; air quality already reaching unhealthy levels in some areas—check airnow.gov for your location
  • Dry weather continues for next 7 days with high pressure in control; only a small chance (10% or less) of light drizzle early next week
  • Increased threat of sneaker waves expected through Wednesday evening. Large, unexpected waves can sweep across the beach without warning, sweeping people into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches. These sneaker waves can also move large objects such as logs, crushing anyone caught underneath.Don`t be fooled by an ocean that looks calm.  There can be 30 minutes of small waves before a sneaker wave strikes.  Avoid rocks and jetties. Avoid steep beaches.  Stay much farther back from the water and never turn your back on the ocean.
