50501 Movement Sparks Protests Nationwide, Including in Garberville

Thousands of protesters gathered across the United States today as part of the 50501 movement, a nationwide protest effort that began on social media. According to the group’s website, the #50501 protests emerged as a decentralized, rapid-response movement against what organizers call the “anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration and its plutocratic allies. The movement aimed to coordinate protests in all 50 states on a single day—February 17th, Presidents’ Day—giving rise to the popular slogan “Not My President’s Day.”
On the North Coast, protests were held in Eureka and Ukiah, with demonstrators gathering in both Humboldt and Mendocino County city centers.
In Garberville, a small but determined group of residents braved the rainy weather to rally under the town clock. Protesters voiced concerns ranging from job losses and healthcare access to a broader unease with the current political climate. Longtime resident Cheryl Goldman said she felt compelled to join like-minded individuals locally, even if she couldn’t travel to larger rallies. However, some attendees admitted they felt unsafe speaking out, citing negative reactions on social media and a tense political atmosphere.
Despite these challenges, protesters emphasized the importance of local organizing. They plan to continue holding vigils, networking, and calling representatives to push for change.
