The Eel River at Fern Bridge is expected to reach major flood stage, potentially cresting at over 25 feet by Friday afternoon. This poses a serious threat, with potential impacts including the closure of Highway 211 to Ferndale. Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for areas near the mouth of the Eel River and Mad River, particularly in the Fortuna/Ferndale and Arcata bottoms regions. Emergency officials are closely monitoring the situation and have established a command post. The public is urged to heed all evacuation orders, sign up for emergency alerts, and check on vulnerable neighbors. The Humboldt County Fairgrounds have opened to shelter livestock, and an evacuation center has been set up at the Fortuna Fireman’s Pavilion. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to never attempt to drive through flooded areas.
