Music is Healing
By Kara Randolph, Station Manager
Many of us are still in shock and dealing with an array of emotions from the recent election. While there are many uncertainties of where our future is heading, one thing we know is that music is a powerful healing tool that improves our health and brings us together. Music therapy includes active listening, songwriting, playing instruments, singing and considering the meaning of song lyrics. Music regulates emotions, helps us feel more grounded, relieves anxiety and stress, activates the brain’s pleasure center and helps us feel more comfortable. Studies have shown that music helps relieve the effects of chronic pain, learning & physical disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, substance abuse disorder, stroke, trauma, Parkinson’s, dementia and more. Music also makes our community stronger through social interactions, cultural understanding and community participation. Next time you feel alone, sad, angry, anxious or have other uncomfortable feelings, play your favorite song, listen to a new song, sing your heart out and/or tune into KMUD and feel the discomfort leave your body and mind. KMUD amplifies the voices for our community, celebrating diversity and global connections through music and talk shows that liberate the mind.
“Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything” -Plato
“Rhythms and melody contain representations of anger and mildness and also of courage and temperance and all their opposites and other ethical qualities…” – Aristotle

TUC Radio: Sea Shepherd, protecting the whales… from prison!
by Dorothee, Membership Coordinator
TUC Radio is a regular weekly program that airs on KMUD every Saturday at 8:30am. It brings you the untold stories about the impact of big corporations on society.
On October 26th, we heard Captain Paul Watson describe his extraordinary journey saving whales and life in the oceans. Paul Watson was co-founder of Greenpeace and CEO of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
Imprisoned in Greenland, facing possible extradition to Japan, Paul Watson is in prison up to today. They are asking for a sentence of 15 years for Paul Watson’s interference, using Sea Shepherd boats, in their slaughter of whales by Japanese vessels in international waters in the Antarctic.
An international effort is under way to prevent his extradition to Japan, and request asylum for him in France.
Listen to the program here, and find out more about the issue here.

Discussions about Insects
by Sheila, volunteer and programmer
KMUD has a variety of talk shows that cover important topics and share a plethora of information with the listeners. Be sure to check out the Discussions Show on Friday Night Talk from November 1st in the archive to learn more about the insect apocalypse and loss of biodiversity leading to a drastic population decline. Wild Ginger and Poison Oak were joined by entomologists Kevin Weiner and Kevin Huntley. It was an invigorating conversation among enthusiasts and advocates for insects. The show addressed the pest stigma while enhancing the importance of pollinators, predators, decomposers and all the other unique roles insects have in creating a biodiverse and healthy planet. A whopping 87% of plants rely on insects for pollinating. They also discussed the windshield phenomenon, a measure of the number of dead insects on car windshields and found an alarming 80% decrease over a 20 year span.
Check in with Kevin Weiner at his facebook group All Bugs Go to Kevin and reach out to Kevin Huntley by email at kevin@huntleyfamily.net. Kevin Huntley lives locally in Humboldt and has a passion for educating. He has shared his collection of 270 native insect species while lecturing at various schools throughout Humboldt and Mendocino. Listen to the show here.

November Newsroom Update
by Lauren Schmitt, News Director
KMUD News has wrapped up another election cycle where we brought you live election coverage on November 5th and have been reporting on local, state, and nations races.
There are a few contests that are still too close to call, like the Arcata City Council Race (although it looks like all 3 incumbents will likely retain their seats), on the state level: five propositions have passed, but three failed. Two remain undecided, and the fate of who controls the House of Representatives is undecided although Republicans inch towards victory, and if successful, will control all three branches of government. Here is our latest update

Eduardo Arriero brings us his Mexican décima
by Dorothee, Membership Coordinator
A décima is a ten-line stanza of poetry. The most popular form is called décima espinela after Vicente Espinel (1550–1624), a Spanish writer, poet, and musician from the Spanish Golden Age who used it extensively throughout his compositions.
The décima deals with a wide range of subject matters, including themes that are philosophical, religious, lyrical, and political. Humorous décimas would typically satirize an individual’s weakness or foolish act.
Eduardo Arriero is visiting Humboldt for only a few weeks, and DJ Daniel managed to bring him to us on the Land of a 1000 Dances, Tuesday November 5th. Click here or on the photo to go watch our YouTube video.
