SHBVB Hosts Holiday “Ice” Skating Rink for the holidays

A new holiday attraction has opened in downtown Garberville, adding a festive sparkle to the season. The “Humboldt Gateway to the Redwoods Skating Rink” is now welcoming visitors in the Sherwood Forest parking lot. Unlike traditional ice rinks, this eco-friendly facility uses synthetic ice panels, making it an innovative and sustainable option for Southern Humboldt’s warm climate.
The rink, measuring 30 by 50 feet, is sheltered under a spacious 40 by 60-foot tent, creating a cozy winter vibe. An adjoining 10 by 30-foot tent provides additional space for skaters to prepare or take a break.
“The rink is not actual ice, which helps keep our environmental footprint to a minimum,” explained Laura Lasseter , Director of Operations for the Southern Humboldt Business and Visitors Bureau. “We’re thrilled to bring this unique experience to our community.”
The rink officially opened on Friday, December 6, and will operate throughout the holiday season. Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for children aged 10 and under, with skate rentals included. In a show of community spirit, local schools are bussing in approximately 700 students over the next two weeks to enjoy the rink.
The Southern Humboldt Chamber of Commerce has been a key supporter of the project, emphasizing its importance in bringing residents together and boosting local holiday festivities.
But the holiday fun doesn’t stop at skating. Garberville will also host its annual Small Town Christmas and the Serapti Lighted Parade on December 21, promising a day full of cheer and community celebration.
“It’s a wonderful time for us here in Southern Humboldt,” Lasseter added. “We’re excited to bring families together. Come out and make some memories!”
Whether you’re gliding across the synthetic ice or enjoying the festive events, Garberville offers plenty of ways to embrace the holiday spirit this season.
