Whitethorn Elementary Now Enrolling Students
Parents of children who will be 4 or 5 years old by September 1st are invited to learn more
about enrolling in TK and Kindergarten at Whitethorn Elementary School for the 2025-2026
school year!
Whitethorn Elementary School is welcoming interested families with students in any grade
TK-6th to visit the campus at 16851 Briceland-Thorn Road any Friday from 10 AM to 3 PM for a
meet-&-greet and assistance with registration. Registration paperwork is also available online at
whitethorn.sohumusd.com under “Student Registration” and can be emailed to
whitethorn@sohumusd.com.
Whitethorn Elementary has served children living in the Upper Mattole Valley since 1894, with
the current campus having been built in 1957 and now serving Briceland, Shelter Cove and
Ettersburg as well. Whitethorn features an intimate classroom environment on a beautiful four
acre clearing flanked by tall Redwoods and Douglas Fir near the banks of the Mattole River on
historic Sinkyone land.
As part of the Southern Humboldt Joint Unified School District, Whitethorn’s instructional team is
made up of passionate, highly qualified teachers and support staff with a strong emphasis on
individualized education, a strong sense of self, outdoor learning, and academic excellence. The
school has invested in literacy support and all students have access to Chromebooks and up to
date instructional materials. Enrichment offerings, often with guest educators, include Zumba,
music, mask-making, survival skills, poetry, and more!
Whitethorn Elementary offers early drop off at 8:20 AM and a free afterschool program that runs
until 6:00 PM. Safe and reliable bus and van transportation is available for students of all ages
between Shelter Cove and Ettersburg Junction. The food service program offers a nutritious
breakfast and lunch, as well as an afternoon snack and supper in the afterschool program.
