Body of Missing Infant Recovered After Trinity River Crash

Search and recovery operations in Trinity County came to a heartbreaking end yesterday, May 6, with the discovery of 9-month-old Oliver Cox, who had been missing since a vehicle crash on State Route 299 early in the morning of May 1.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 1:35 a.m. when a 2004 Lexus ES 330 veered off the highway near Big Flat, plunging down an embankment and into the Trinity River. The driver, a 21-year-old woman from Shasta Lake, and a 19-year-old male passenger escaped the submerged vehicle and were later transported to Trinity General Hospital with minor to moderate injuries. The infant, Oliver, was unaccounted for.

The crash sparked an intensive multi-day search involving air support, divers, and multiple agencies including the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, CHP, Hoopa emergency services, CalFire, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Dive Team.

Tragically, on May 6, a diver who had traveled from out of the area to assist in the effort located Oliver’s body submerged in the river. Deputies responded immediately to the scene, and the infant was recovered. His family was notified shortly thereafter.

In a statement, the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office expressed their condolences: “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Oliver.” The agency also thanked all responders for their tireless work in the effort to bring the child home.

KMUD News extends our deepest sympathies to Oliver’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

A GoFundMe has been established to support the family.
