Community Safety & Awareness Report-August 8, 2025

KMUD’s new Community Resources and Calendar page is now live on the KMUD website, kmud.org, under the COMMUNITY dropdown menu. Our improved calendar provides addresses, phone numbers and up to date information for farmers markets, food distributions, public meals, blood drives and other community services. 

Today, Friday, August 8th,  Humboldt, Mendocino, Del Norte and Trinity and Counties have suspended all burns at this time. 

Until Mid-August,  The Humboldt County Department of Public Works is repairing Bell Springs Road at Post Mile 2.20 & 4.96, north of Island Mountain Road. With an expected completion date in Mid-August. expect delays of up to 30 minutes between 7:30am and 4:30pm during this period. 

CalTrans reports the ongoing full closure of the Southbound 101 On-Ramp from Hooker Creek Rd due to drainage work. The on-ramp opens after 7pm.  

County of Humboldt’s Public Works Department has issued the following: work begins today on a slurry seal project throughout McKinleyville.  Tentative dates are Friday August 8th, Monday August 11th and Tuesday August 12th. Work will take place between 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Expect extended delays greater than 30 minutes with one-lane controlled traffic.

The North Coast Growers Association is hosting the Garberville Farmers’ Market from 11 until 3pm and the Eureka Friday Night Market from 5:30 until 8:30pm. 

In Humboldt, Food for People is hosting food distributions in Eureka from 10 until 3:45pm (and Alderpoint from 1 until 2:30pm.)

The Northern California Community Blood Bank’s blood mobiles will be at Safeway in Arcata from 10 until 4pm and at Falafelove in King Salmon, 1125 King Salmon Ave, from 11 until 5pm. Pro-tip: incredible food so plan to grab lunch… and tell them KMUD sent you. To schedule an appointment to donate, visit nccbb.net.

In Mendocino, the Mendocino Food Network is hosting food distributions in Ukiah from noon until 4pm, Fort Bragg from 10 until 3:45pm; Willits from 1 to 4:30pm; and Point Arena from 2 until 5pm.   

(No need to read the following lunch announcements at 3pm.)  Lunches are provided for seniors at the Willits Senior Center from 11:45 until 1:00pm, and the Redwood Coast Seniors Center in Fort Bragg from 11:30 until 1:15pm. Plowshares Peace and Justice Center in Ukiah provides a hot meal weekdays from 11:30 until noon. 

Meals are provided Monday through Friday at Willits Daily Bread from 4:30 to 5:30pm and at the Mendocino Coast Hospitality House in Fort Bragg at 3pm.
