Community Safety & Awareness Report – December 11, 2024

Redwood Drive at Bear Canyon Road to Evergreen Road, between Garberville and Redway, is closed due to a rockslide. County crews are removing debris from the roadway. The road is anticipated to reopen around 1:30 pm today. 

Weather conditions permitting, Green Diamond Resource Company plans to continue prescribed burning for fuel hazard reduction today near the town Smith River, in Del Norte County and in the Bald Mountain area near the town of Korbel, in Humboldt County. Burning operations are implemented in coordination with CAL FIRE and the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District.  Please note that smoke may be visible in surrounding areas, including Highway 101 near Smith River and Highway 299 near Blue Lake, while prescribed burning activities are being conducted. 

 Today, Wed Dec 11th, the Southern Humboldt Chapter of the HCPBA has planned to burn a unit of the Old Briceland project that could be as large as 59 acres of forest understory. Goals include; fuels reduction, forest health, cultural objectives, and supporting a larger strategic fuelbreak west of Garberville. Factors such as potential smoke impacts and expected fire behavior are closely examined before any ignitions begin. Local fire agencies will be assisting and smoke may be visible from Redway, Ettersburg Rd, Briceland Rd, Alderpoint Rd, and Hwy 101 @ Dean Creek.

The Food For People Mobile Produce Pantry will be at the Rio Dell Volunteer Fire Department today between 10am and 12:30pm. 

Mendocino County residents, the Willits Food Bank will be hosting a food distribution from 1-430 pm at 229 east San Francisco Street in Willits. Call 459-3333 for details. The Fort Bragg Food Bank will be hosting a food distribution from 12 noon to 4pm today at 910 north Franklin Street in Fort Bragg. For a hot meal, residents can visit the Willits Daily Bread, Monday thru Thursday for Dinner, from 5:30-6:30pm located at 58 Bush St. Willits. For info, call 459-3947. Seniors in Willits can participate in the Willits Seniors Home Meal Delivery program, Monday through Friday. Contact 459-6826 if you’d like information on this program. 

The Mendocino Food and Nutrition Program will be hosting a drive-thru pop up for fresh, premade food distribution in Covelo tomorrow at 76300 Grange Street from 12 noon to 1 pm. Swing by for a delicious premade meal.

The Northern California Community Blood Bank’s blood mobile will be at the College of the Redwoods located at 7351  Tompkins Hill Road in Eureka from 10 am to 4pm, and at Cal Poly Humboldt located at 1 Harpst Street in Arcata from 11 am to 4 pm. And as always, the blood bank is open Monday thru Friday, located at 2524 Harrison Avenue in Eureka. To schedule an appointment to donate, visit nccbb.net 

You can help to keep our community trash-free by joining the Eel River Clean-up Project tomorrow, and now, every Thursday. Last week, with just 2 people, the group removed 680 lbs of trash from the environments surrounding our communities. Join ERCP tomorrow at 9:30am at the Garberville Vet’s Park, across from Dazey’s, to help keep Southern Humboldt roadsides trash free.

CAL FIRE has lifted the requirement for residents in the state responsibility area to obtain a CAL FIRE burn permit, however, an air quality air permit is required year round to avoid receiving a violation. 

Today, Wednesday, December 11th IS a permissive burn day in Mendocino, Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity counties.
