Community Safety & Awareness Report – November 20, 2024

The Food For People Mobile Produce Pantry originally scheduled to be in Willow Creek today at the Willow Creek Community Resource Center at 38883 Ca-299, between 10am and 12 Noon, has been canceled due to the storm. 

Mendocino County residents, the Willits Food Bank offers food distribution from 1-430 pm at 229 east San Francisco Street in Willits. Call 459-3333 for details.  The Fort Bragg Food Bank will be hosting a food distribution from 12 noon to 4pm today at 910 north Franklin Street in Fort Bragg. For a hot meal,  residents can visit the Willits Daily Bread, Monday thru Thursday for Dinner, from 5:30-6:30pm located at 58 Bush St. Willits. For info, call 459-3947. Seniors in Willits can participate in the Willits Seniors Home Meal Delivery program, Monday through Friday. Contact 459-6826 if you’d like information on this program. 

Food distribution will be occurring today and every Wednesday at the Garberville Presbyterian Church located at 437 Maple Lane from 2 to 4 pm.

The Mendocino Food and Nutrition Program will be hosting a drive-thru pop up for fresh, premade food distribution in Willits tomorrow at 1250 Blosser Lane from 10am to 1130 am. Swing by for a delicious premade meal. 

The Northern California Community Blood Bank’s blood mobile will beat Changing Tides Family Services located at 2259 Myrtle Avenue in Eureka from 11 am to 5 pm, and at the Safeway located at 701 South Fortuna Boulevard from 11 am to 4 pm. And as always, the blood bank is open Monday thru Friday, located at 2524 Harrison Avenue in Eureka. To schedule an appointment to donate, visit nccbb.net 

Covid tests are available for free in the lobby of Area One Agency on Aging, located at 333 J Street in Eureka, while supplies last.

You can help to keep our community trash-free by joining the Eel River Clean-up Project tomorrow, and every Thursday. Join ERCP tomorrow at 9:30am at the Garberville Vet’s Park, across from Dazey’s, to help keep Southern Humboldt roadsides trash free.

CAL FIRE has lifted the burn suspension, but fire season designation is still in effect. Residents in state responsibility areas must also obtain a Cal Fire burn permit. Year round, you still must have an air quality burn permit to avoid receiving a violation. 

Provided you have a valid air quality burn permit, Wednesday, November 20th IS a permissive burn day in Humboldt, Del Norte, Mendocino, and Trinity counties.

Due to the storm, approximately 6,000 Humboldt Residents Without Power as of 6 am this morning. 

According to PG&E, “Crews are currently responding to emergencies due to storm damage. Once the extreme weather has passed, crews will begin repairs.” There is no estimated time of restoration. Updates can be found at www.pge.com/outages

91% of Humboldt County still has power, but approximately 5,000 residents are currently without electricity.

The Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services shared these helpful tips on staying warm during an outage: 

𝗗𝗢𝗡’𝗧:

  • Use your stove or oven to heat your home, as this can be extremely dangerous. 
  • Use charcoal or gas grills or propane heaters indoors. Odorless, invisible fumes from charcoal, gas and propane can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Using these heaters indoors can also increase the risk of fire.

𝗗𝗢:

  • Layer Up: Wear multiple layers of lightweight clothing, including hats, mittens, and socks to trap body heat.
  • Blankets and Sleeping Bags: Use wool or fleece blankets or sleep in sleeping bags to stay cozy.
  • Stick Together: Close off one room, stay with family or roommates in this space and keep the door shut to preserve warmth.
