Community Safety & Awareness Report – October 31, 2024

Food distribution will be occurring today and every Tuesday & Thursday at the Garberville Presbyterian Church located at 437 Maple Lane from 1030am  to 12 noon.

Today and every Thursday of the season, the Henderson Center and McKinleyville offer patrons the freshest Humboldt-County-Grown and GMO-free produce along with plants, meats and other wonderful products. The Henderson Center Farmers’ Market is open from 10 am to 1 pm on the corner of Henderson and F streets in Eureka. The McKinleyville Farmers’ Market has a huge variety of locally grown produce, decorative and edible plants, and locally caught fish. and is located at  in the parking lot of the Eureka Natural Foods McKinleyville location 

Mendocino County residents can receive food assistance today at the Fort Bragg Food Bank from 4pm to 6pm today at 910 north Franklin Street in Fort Bragg. The Mendocino Community Food Pantry will also be hosting a food distribution today, and every Thursday, from 2 to 4pm at 44831 Main Street next to the Mendocino Presbyterian Church. Residents can receive a hot meal at Willits Daily Bread, Monday thru Thursday for Dinner, from 5:30-6:30pm located at 58 Bush St. Willits. For info, call 459-3947. Additionally, the Anderson Valley Senior Center has hot meals available for dinner today at the Veterans Hall in Booneville. For details, call 895-3609. Seniors in Willits can participate in the Willits Seniors Home Meal Delivery program, Monday through Friday. Contact 459-6826 if you’d like information on this program. 

The Northern California Community Blood Bank’s blood mobile will be at A to Z Eyecare located at 851 Bayside Road in Arcata from 10am to 3pm, and at Safeway located at 701 S. Fortuna Blvd in Fortuna from 11am to 4pm. And as always, individuals can donate at the blood bank daily, Monday thru Friday, located at 2524 Harrison Avenue in Eureka. BURNING HAS BEEN SUSPENDED IN ALL OF TRINITY, MENDOCINO, HUMBOLDT & DEL NORTE COUNTIES.

Beginning tomorrow, November 1st, the burn suspension in Trinity, Mendocino, Humboldt, & Del Norte counties will be lifted. 

A North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District (NCUAQMD) burn permit is required year-round and contains the permittee’s designated burn zone.

For more information, to get an air quality permit, and to make sure it is a permissive burn day:

  • Humboldt, Trinity, and Del Norte County residents can call the North Coast Air Quality Management District at 1 866 burn day or 1-866-287-6329. 
  • Mendocino County residents can call 707-463-4391. or you can go online to mendoair.org for an air quality permit.

The ‘Winter Burning’ season is declared by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and runs from about November through April 30 of each year.

The Local Fire Protection and the Air Quality Management District require a Burn Permit for all ‘open outdoor burning’ during the ‘Winter Burning’ season on lands under their jurisdiction.

  • Burn permits are required year round.
  • Open outdoor burning is only allowed on permissive burn days set by the Air Resources Board.
  • Only vegetative matter may be burned. The vegetation must have grown on the property.
  • Burn barrels cannot be used.
  • READ the Burn Information Sheet that came with your permit

Fire Safety Requirements for Burn Piles

1.  Minimum 10-foot clearance from all flammable material.

2.  Adult in attendance with shovel until fire is Dead Out.

3.  Water supply at burning site.

4.  For the best possible burn, dry vegetative matter should be burned completely between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm in any single Burn Day.
