HCSO Releases Footage of Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has released body camera footage from an incident that occurred on April 25, 2024, involving a deputy-involved shooting in the Eureka area. “When we have a critical incident, we want to release as much information as possible as soon as the investigation allows,” stated HCSO in a press release.

The incident began when a 75-year-old woman called 9-1-1 to report that she had been shot twice at her home on Fern Street. She stated that a suspect had approached her driveway and opened fire before fleeing on foot.

Deputy Travis Rogers and Sergeant Conan Moore arrived at the scene and located a suspect matching the description provided. Upon spotting law enforcement, the suspect fled on foot into a residence near the 2400 block of Fern Street.

According to the HCSO, after the house was surrounded, the suspect exited the residence and pointed a firearm at the deputies. In response, the deputies fired at the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Kevin Burks of Eureka. Burks succumbed to his injuries two days later at a local hospital.

In the Critical Incident Video posted on the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office YouTube page, Sheriff Honsal stated that the Critical Incident Response Team’s investigation has been completed and submitted to the District Attorney for review.
