Challenges and hopes by Kara Randolph, Station Manager

KMUD is an essential community resource, providing independent news, emergency updates, and diverse music and cultural programming. We are also a vital educational platform, offering insightful discussions, interviews, and community-driven content that informs and inspires. As our Spring Membership Drive finishes, please consider making a donation if you haven’t yet.

While federal funding challenges exist, we remain hopeful. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) continues to support public media, and we’re actively securing additional grants and members to keep KMUD strong.

Public Media Funding by Lauren Schmitt, News Director

This week, KMUD News spoke with Janine Jackson, Program Director of Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) and host of the syndicated radio show CounterSpin, which airs Sundays at 1PM on KMUD.

Jackson discussed the importance of independent media and the growing threats to public broadcasting, including efforts to eliminate funding for public media under proposals like Project 2025. Listen to the whole interview here.

Flying Squirrel by Wild Ginger, programmer of Wild Craft
Not sure if you caught the Wild Craft when I had a special guest appearance from a flying squirrel? It’s one of those magic KMUD moments I will never forget! If you haven’t yet heard the show, Wild Craft is every other Tuesday at four (opposite the always lovely Coconut Wireless). Wild Craft features an interview or short discussion about an animal or plant; the idea is to focus on living with the land and with our plant and animal allies. Then I play indie rock, neofolk, Nordic, and world music for a bit to set the scene. So, it was the Feb. 25 show when a flying squirrel glided on in during a discussion about that incredible arboreal mammal… read more here.

Live Sessions on KMUD by Dorothee, Membership Coordinator Our Membership Drives are always a great opportunity to get local musicians in the studio… give it a listen.

Brian Sykes Brian Sykes, the local legend and part of @blu.axis performed live in the studio on It’s All About The Music. Mumzer from the DJ booth was playing the harmonica…. what a treat! Or listen to the whole performance on Mumzer’s show, starting an hour and 15 minutes in.

Do you Believe in the Power of Kindness? by Dorothee, Membership Coordinator

We had an absolute blast hosting the kids from Beginnings in Briceland at KMUD! During their visit, we gave them a tour of our music library, explored different music genres, introduced them to a turntable, and even had the joy of broadcasting their live singing on air.

They were featured on Diving In with Susan—you can listen to the full show [here]. The kids join in at the 34-minute mark, sharing from a heartfelt passion for The Beatles’ Nowhere Man to stories about doing the dishes at home and recalling the recent earthquake. Their enthusiasm was absolutely delightful!

A huge thank you to Beginnings and especially their teacher, Nona, for bringing them by and connecting them with KMUD. We loved having them!

James Geth Went Downside by Dennis Maher, Program Director

Sadly, I must share with you that I’ve learned our beloved DJ James Geth, host of The Downside Of Midnight and Universal Gospel Experience, has passed away. His voice of gentle spirit and rich, deep tone that has warmed the late night airwaves for decades will be sorely missed. James, we honor you and appreciate all your many years of dedication, community volunteerism, and sharing really great music. Say his name… James Geth!
