KMUD News Tuesday Road Update [1pm update]

Humboldt County:

  • Highway 299 –Closed due to snow from Lord Ellis to East Fork Willow Creek Bridge. There is no estimated time for reopening.
  • Highway 36 – Closed east of Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park due to a slide and west of Bridgeville near Kneeland Road due to flooding.

    Highway 36- Chains are required from Mad River to Platina
  • Highway 3- Chains are required on from Post Mountain to Douglas City.

    Highway 254- Closed from Pepperwood to Shively due to flooding


The CHP is reporting multiple vehicles stuck in higher elevations due to snow, including Chezum Road, Kneeland Road and the 1200 block of Fickle Hill. Avoid travel if possible, or make sure to carry chains.

Mendocino County:

  • Highway 101 – Open to one-way controlled traffic in Leggett after a slide closed the road for most of Monday.

    Highway 1 – FULLY CLOSED from Lighthouse Road to Garcia River Bridge.
  • Highway 128 – FULLY CLOSED from the Highway 1 junction to just west of Navarro.
  • Highway 175 – FULLY CLOSED in Hopland from the U.S. 101 junction to McDowell Street.
  • 🚧 There is currently no estimated time of reopening for these closures.

Del Norte County:

  • Highway 199 – Chain control requirements are in place from Idlewild to the Oregon border.

Winter Storm Warning – Northern Humboldt & Del Norte County
Until 4 AM PST Wednesday

  • Heavy snow expected, with 3 to 5 inches above 1500 feet and possible dusting as low as 500 feet.
  • Travel conditions will be difficult, and chains may be required in mountain passes.

Winter Weather Advisory – Southwestern Humboldt, including Honeydew, Shelter Cove, Briceland, and Whitethorn
Until 3 AM PST Wednesday

  • Wet snow up to 2 inches above 1500 feet, with possible dusting as low as 500 feet.
  • Roads are expected to be slippery.
