Mendocino County Seeking Volunteers for Civil Grand Jury

Mendocino County is calling on local citizens to serve on the 2025-2026 Civil Grand Jury, a critical mechanism for government oversight that allows ordinary residents to investigate local governmental entities. “The grand jury is an amazing vehicle for transparency,” says Kim Turner, executive court officer. “Unlike boards appointed by politicians, this is a more organic process comprised of ordinary citizens interested in their communities and government.”
The upcoming grand jury will consist of 19 members who will serve a one-year term beginning July 1st. Volunteers will investigate various local government operations, with recent focus areas including Family and Children Services and County Human Resources. The time commitment varies throughout the year, ranging from 10-25 hours per week.
Participants will collaborate on selecting investigation topics, with potential sources including citizen letters, current events, and jurors’ own community observations. “We’re looking for people interested in good government and making sure our government is responsive to its citizens,” Turner emphasized.
Applicants can apply online through the county or court websites until June 20th.
