New Scholarship Offers Support for 2SLGBTQIA+ Students in California

With recent policy changes affecting the queer community and college students, a new scholarship program has been launched to support LGBTQ+ students in California. The National Rainbow College Fund (NRCF), powered by the San Diego Foundation, aims to provide financial assistance and resources to students facing unique challenges.
“We’re hoping to provide much-needed support to LGBTQ+ students, now more than ever,” said Rogelio Espinoza, manager of the NRCF. “Many students experience social acceptance challenges, mental health struggles, and family rejection, which can impact their ability to afford college and build financial stability. This scholarship is designed to help alleviate some of those obstacles so they can focus on their education and future.”
A Scholarship Prioritizing Privacy
One key feature of the NRCF scholarship is its commitment to privacy protection, ensuring that students who are not publicly out can apply without concern.
“We take confidentiality very seriously,” Espinoza explained. “Applications are submitted online, and only our staff directly involved with the scholarship have access. Volunteer evaluators do not see any personally identifiable information. This ensures fair and equitable grading while also protecting applicants’ privacy.”
The scholarship is open to LGBTQ+ students regardless of where they are in their journey—whether they are publicly out, not out, or somewhere in between.
Eligibility and Application Details
To qualify for the scholarship, students must:
- Be a California resident for at least one year
- Identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community
- Be enrolled in at least six units of coursework
The program supports a wide range of students, including:
- Graduating high school seniors
- Current college and university students
- Vocational and trade school students
- Adult re-entry learners (26 and older)
This year, up to 200 students will be awarded $2,500 each, totaling $500,000 in scholarships.
A Growing Need for Support
Students who have already received this scholarship have expressed how much of a difference it has made in their ability to continue their education.
“It’s not just about financial aid—it’s about making sure students have the resources they need to succeed in school and in life,” Espinoza shared. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Students have told us they wish this scholarship had been available sooner, and many have been eager to share their stories and gratitude.”
The NRCF scholarship is one step toward increasing financial support for LGBTQ+ students, and interest has been high.
