September is Local Food Month in Humboldt County: Celebrate local food with events and community gatherings all month long
HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. – September is officially Local Food Month in Humboldt County, a community-wide celebration of the farmers, ranchers, fishers, food makers, and markets that bring fresh, locally grown food to our tables. Throughout the month, residents and visitors are invited to explore the flavors of Humboldt, connect with local producers, and learn more about the importance of keeping food dollars close to home. Local Food Month is made possible thanks to the participation of farmers, food producers, community groups, and local businesses.

Organic Seed Alliance (OSA) – Local & National Projects
OSA makes positive impacts to the local and regional growing communities, such as our work on culinary plant breeding and vegetable variety trials focused on regional growing conditions. While these projects operate nationally, they all have local components.
Here in Humboldt County, we’re conducting:
- Organic Seed Production Research on Economics and Yield (OSPREY): replicated research trials studying genotype × environment × management interactions in organic seed production and influence on seed yield and farm economics.
- Tomato Organic Management and Improvement (TOMI) : Large breeding trial in California selecting for disease-resistant, farmer-preferred organic tomato varieties.
- Student Collaborative Organic Plant Breeding Education (SCOPE): On-farm trials in California of tomatoes, peppers, lima beans, and common beans.
We hope that our national research projects conducted at the local and regional levels will support more resilient and diverse food and seed systems. OSA appreciates our previous and current local collaborations with the North Coast Growers’ Association (NCGA) and other local farms and farming organizations. Why Local Food Matters
Choosing local food means:
- Fresher, more nutritious meals for you and your family
- Supporting small farms and food producers who care for the land
- Reducing the environmental impact of long-distance food transport
- Building a stronger, more resilient local economy
Join Us! Celebrate Humboldt County’s vibrant local food system this September. Together, we can make every meal an investment in our health, our neighbors, and our future. Support this work by donating to NCGA today.
