Open Horizons Brings Back “Haunted Hoop” for Halloween Thrills in Garberville

Open Horizons, a new nonprofit based in Southern Humboldt, is dedicated to creating safe, fun spaces for local youth. This Halloween, they’re bringing back their third annual “Haunted Hoop” event at the Garberville Community Park.
“The Haunted Hoop is essentially what got us started,” says Stephanie Hancock, founder and artistic director of Open Horizons. The Haunted Hoop transforms a 76-foot-long greenhouse into a haunted house. “Every year, we change the floor plan a little, with high school students and volunteers stepping in as actors.” The hoop is open Halloween night from 6pm-9pm and is offering free entry to all.
For even more frights, Open Horizons is hosting a second night on Friday, November 1, when the Haunted Hoop returns with expanded festivities, including live music, food booths, and contests for kids of all ages. Starting at 3:30 PM, families can enjoy games, a face-painting station, and two contests: a “Best Apple Dish” bake-off at 6:00 PM and a carved pumpkin contest judged by popular vote at 7:00 PM. Costumes are encouraged, with prizes for standout costumes.
Local bands Camo Cowboy and Intergalactic Trash will take the stage from 6:00 PM onward, adding music to the night’s spooky atmosphere. Kids can enjoy face painting with Halloween and Day of the Dead designs, games, and food from local vendors.

In rural areas like Southern Humboldt, where trick-or-treating can be a challenge, the community comes together for festivities. The Southern Humboldt Chamber of Commerce is organizing a “Trunk or Treat” in Garberville Town Square on October 31, from 3:00 to 5:30 PM, making it easy for families to join the Halloween spirit. Afterward, families can head to the Haunted Hoop at the Community Park, open from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for a free night of thrills in the haunted greenhouse.
