New managing team at KMUD!
by Stephanie Thomas for KMUD Board of Directors

Hello KMUD Community,

The Board of Directors would like to extend a warm welcome to Kara Randolph as our new Station Manager and Sarah Starck as our Financial Manager beginning October 1st!

Kara, also known as DJ Anya, has experience in radio, producing events, and working with the students at CalPoly Humboldt. Kara also has experience in social media and marketing, conflict mediation, and management skills. Kara is a member of the Humboldt Hot Air Radio Advisory Board. We are very pleased to welcome Kara to our team!

Sarah has accepted our newly formed role of Financial Manager! Sarah has helped us very graciously as the Interim Station Manager and we are pleased she has taken on this new role. She has extensive knowledge in accounting, human resources, and financial oversight, to name a few.

This is an exciting new chapter for KMUD and we hope that you stop by to get to know Kara and Sarah!

Sincerely,

The KMUD Board of Directors

Ever grateful
by Sarah Starck

I am grateful that the KMUD Board of Directors has put their trust in me as KMUD’s Financial Manager. My goals are to implement best practices for grant management, accounting, cash flow management, and steadfast support for our fundraising team.  I worked on these things previously as KMUD’s Financial Consultant.  In addition, this position includes human resource compliance oversight.

I want to thank you for all the positive feedback I have received during my time as Interim Station Manager.  I am happy to be able to stay on the team and train our new Station Manager, Kara Randolph.  We will work together to improve the sustainability of KMUD as well as moving the organization forward into the future.  Important goals for 2025 include overall digitization, expanding news broadcasting into other platforms, enhanced emergency preparedness and alerts, and increased youth engagement. Resilience and security of infrastructure are also long term goals.  I look forward to working with Kara and all of the staff, programmers, volunteers, and community of listeners that support KMUD and make it truly People Powered Community Radio!

Broadcasting from Studio C!
by Rob Seifert Gage, Studio Tech Director

October 2 marks the first broadcast from our newly remodeled Studio C. OG KMUDder and host of Women on Wednesday, Brenda Starr, was our first to try it out, after a long process and tireless work from our Technical Director Simon Frech, who persevered and made all the right adjustments to get us going. Trainings will happen and I believe the transition will be an easy one for most programmers .

Thank you to all our volunteers and local artisans who had a part in this historic remodel, including our hardwood floor installer, Gary Vella, and Dan Primerano who built the gorgeous desk.
And huge gratitude to our donors: Humboldt Area Foundation / Wild Rivers Community Foundation, the Tom and Stephanie Perrett Fund, and Christine and Jalmer Berg Foundation, and our volunteer grant team.

Donate to KMUD, help us keep it fresh!

News from the Newsroom
by Lauren Schmitt, News Director

Our headline makes Headline
It was an honor to join award-winning journalist James Faulk on KEET TV’s
Headline Humboldt to discuss my report on the horse fatalities at the 2024
Humboldt County Fair, which prompted an investigation by the California Horse
Racing Board. The investigation ultimately led to new rules for the less regulated
tracks.

Listen to our final headline story of the month:
Fires at Homeless Camps Ignite
Concerns Among Redway Residents
.
Two fires in less than two weeks have erupted at the same homeless encampment
in Redway, sparking outrage among local residents. The latest blaze, on Sunday,
September 29th, prompted one nearby resident to speak out, telling KMUD News
they’ve raised fire safety concerns for years but feel their warnings have been
ignored. We delve into the systemic issues surrounding homelessness, explore
possible solutions, and highlight the efforts currently underway.

Election News: Humboldt County Clerk
by Lauren Schmitt, News Director

Tune in to KMUD News this week to hear from Juan Pablo Cervantes, the
Humboldt County Clerk, Recorder and Registrar of Voters, who shared an update
on all things elections!
Cervantes discusses key preparations for the upcoming presidential election.
Cervantes highlighted important dates, such as September 27 when voter
information guides were mailed, and October 7 when vote-by-mail ballots begin to
be sent out. He emphasized that Humboldt is a Voter’s Choice Act county,
allowing residents multiple voting options, including vote-by-mail, drop-off
locations, and vote centers, which open in phases starting on October 7.
He also addresses concerns about election security, explaining the county’s
rigorous testing procedures to ensure voting systems function correctly.
Transparency measures include public logic and accuracy tests, manual ballot
audits, and collaborations with the independent Transparency Project to ensure
the integrity of results.
Cervantes reassured residents that mechanisms are in place to prevent and detect
issues such as dual voting, and clarified that non-citizens do not vote in local
elections, contrary to some concerns. He encouraged voters to plan ahead, vote early, and take advantage of tools like BallotTrax to track the status of their vote-
by-mail ballots.

Grassroots Radio Conference
by Dorothee, Membership Coordinator

What an honor and a pleasure to represent KMUD at the Grassroots Radio Conference this year, in New Orleans! It was organized by WHIV, no typo here, HIV because they are a radio “turning up the volume on Social Justice and Human Rights” in New Orleans where HIV stays a current issue.

It’s easy sometimes in Redway in SoHum to feel isolated, far away from the world, but going to the GRC enlightened me on KMUD’s importance, politically as a free speech radio station, but also in this network as one of the OG Radio Stations, one of the biggest despite being so rural, and one others look upon.

Click here to see a little photo album I put together.

ECONEWS
by Dorothee, Membership Coordinator

EcoNews Report is a half-hour enviro news/chat program produced in Humboldt,  with Tom Wheeler from Environmental Protection Information Center, EPIC. KMUD airs it every Wednesday at 5:30pm.

Recently they talked about Measure F, the pro-parking ballot measure that opponents warn would thwart ongoing plans to built affordable housing in downtown Eureka. They also dove into How Will Groundwater be Regulated After This Significant Court Ruling?
And many more local environmental issues.

You can find the last 8 episodes on KMUD archives. Just find EcoNews report in the All Shows drop-down menu.

Underwriter of the month: Irene’s granulated garlic
by Patricia Tinkler, Underwriting Coordinator

Hog Farmer Irene Engber started her farm in 1989, and has been providing certified organic vegetables and flowers to Mendocino County ever since. As a resident of Black Oak Ranch, Irene has created a gorgeous fruitful garden that serves the local community. Her eponymous offering, Irene’s Organic Granulated Garlic, has been touted by customers as “the best in all the land” and “AMAZING! She shipped several bags to me here in Idaho–the mailman loved the scent. Another admirer praised it as “the strongest, most flavorful garlic granules I’ve ever tasted!” Her garlic is available at Eureka Natural Foods, Ukiah Co-op, Mariposa’s, Long Valley Feed and area farmers markets.
