KMUD’s September 2024 Newsletter

Staying Ahead of the Curve
by Sarah Starck, Interim Station Manager
So much work goes on behind the scenes of each Membership Drive. We sometimes take for granted the hours of preparation to ready the station, the volunteers, programmers and staff for these important fundraisers.  Phone answerers, daily producers, food donations, live musicians, end of drive events, all need to be coordinated before the Membership Drive even begins. That’s not to mention the Silent Drive letters being written, printed, stuffed, organized, and mailed weeks beforehand. The folks that work tirelessly behind the scenes do it for one reason alone, they love KMUD.

KMUD is experiencing, as we all are, a sharp increase in expenses. The consistent reminder is the repetitive asking for money that you hear on the airwaves, in our newsletters, from our staff and programmers, and from the Board of Directors. It is always a team effort to make ends meet. I would like to give you a few stats so that you can wrap your mind around the amount of inflation we are experiencing here at the MUD.
In 2024 compared to just last year:

– Insurance expenses are up $1000/month

– Transmitter sites costs are up over $500/month

– PG&E is up $1000/month

– News Department costs are up $1700/month

– Almost every other bill is up slightly

> Total monthly expenses in 2024 average around $48k/month

In 2023 they were around $40k/month
Proposed 2025 Budget average monthly expenses are up to $53k/month

Perhaps, you have already received a Silent Drive letter. We encourage you to return it with whatever payment you can offer if you have not already. And if you have already, thank you so much.
Please be sure to donate during our On-air Drive between September 9th to 20th. There will be some really cool premiums for your donation, such as a tickets for
Hunter Noack, In a Landscape on Sept 9th in Mendocino, Hog Farm Celebration on Sept 20-22, Sea Grill Restaurant in Eureka, 18 holes golf at Benbow, Whitethorn Construction and more!
KMUD is not in debt and because of you, we are able to stay just ahead of the curve with all of our expenses. Shout out to this commUNITY! We are resilient, we are strong, we will stay relevant, and we will get through this together.

Please, donate to KMUD

Rami Almerghari, reporting from Gaza
by Lauren Schmitt, News Director

We are proud to spotlight our intern, Julian Jackson, who recently produced a compelling public affairs special featuring an interview with Rami Almerghari, a seasoned KPFA reporter covering the Gaza genocide and the war between Hammas and Israel. Rami has survived 10 months of war while reporting from the front lines.
Listen to Julian’s report here

Gaza is currently regarded as the most dangerous war zone for journalists, as documented by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Since October 7th, 97 journalists have been killed, with many believed to have been targeted. Four remain missing, and numerous others have sustained injuries. Alarmingly, CPJ has also reported the targeted killings of journalists’ families in Gaza.

For 18 years, Rami has been a vital voice for Pacifica Radio, the only U.S.-based national radio network with a correspondent in Gaza.

Movers and Shakers
by Dennis Maher, Program Director
Tubby Tunes
Check out late night radio on KMUD! The Tubby Tunes Radio Radio show is a wild and hilarious gonzo ride through an Americana music landscape that sounds like Dr. Demento got lost on a back-country dirt road. Long John, who has been doing radio since the 1970‘s, describes his take on Americana music as “Genuine Highway 101 Outlaw Boogie Music Deluxe,” You may have heard Long John around holiday season when KMUD traditionally airs his non-traditional Tubby Tunes Holiday Music Massacre. Or perhaps you’ve heard him on his own KPHT-LP station out of Laytonville, a station he and Weird Harold started in 2010.
But be sure and catch his weekly 2 hour KMUD show, airing early Wednesday mornings from 2 til 4am and available always online at the Kmud Archive page.

Listen to the last one here.

Service Fair at KMUD
by Dorothee, Membership coordinator

On Friday September 20th, KMUD’s parking lot in Redway will host our first Service Fair. Our underwriter Caleb Wade will be here from 9am to 4pm to fix your small engines. If you know someone who wants to come and offer their services, let us know … apple pressing, knife sharpening, sock mending are ideas we have.

We’ll let you know more on the air along the Drive, but the idea is: come by with what you need serviced, grab a baked good and a KMUD coffee, renew your membership, visit the newly remodeled studio C and  hang out with KMUDder while you are being served.

Sea Change radio
by Dorothee, Membership Coordinator

Sea Change Radio is a nationally syndicated weekly radio show and podcast focused on the shift to environmental and economic sustainability. KMUD airs Sea Change Radio every Monday at 3am. If you are not into challenging talks at 3am, you can find it on KMUD archives, in the All shows drop down menu, find Sea Change Radio and give it a listen.

For example on September 2nd, you could hear The State Of The Race with political analyst Jared Yates Sexton. On August 26th, the show  featured filmmaker Arthur Bradford about his most recent documentary for MSNBC Films entitled “To Be Destroyed,” which takes viewers inside efforts to ban books from a public high school in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Now you have an idea of what you are missing out on if you are not up in the middle of the night!

Word of the month: Slip
by the Word Patrol Collective

On Wild Craft (every other Tuesday at 4pm) with Wild Ginger on August 27th, her guest Master Herbalist Maria Strouss said :
“Comfrey grows best from root divisions and offsets. The common comfrey you find in the United States now…is a Russian Comfrey…and he created it to be sterile so that the seeds would not propagate…it’s invasive if it spreads by seeds, most of what you get is sterile. Yes, root ball, root pieces, offsets or slips is what they are called.”
Slips are side shoots or fruit that grow from buds on the plant or root stock. Many plants are grown from slips (or what some gardeners refer to as cuttings) rather than seeds.

There are 73 meanings for the word slip. This is one! Thanks Wild Ginger!

Underwriter of the month: In a
Landscape

by Patricia Tinkler, Underwriting Coordinator

Founded in 2016 by classical pianist Hunter Noack, IN A LANDSCAPE: Classical Music in the Wild is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit outdoor concert series where  America’s most stunning landscapes replace the traditional concert hall. Towing a trailer with a 9 foot Steinway piano, Noack chooses wild and stunning locations, and to address the acoustical challenges of performing in open spaces, headsets are given to concertgoers, allowing them to wander the area, engaging with the music on a more visceral, yet expansive level.

Noack is performing at the Ford House Visitor Center & Museum in Mendocino on Monday, September 9th between 4 and 5:30pm. He donated a pair of tickets for KMUD’s Fall Membership Drive to be offered during Classical Spectrum on Monday morning between 10am and noon. Check out one of Hunter’s performances at InALanscape.org
