Tragic Double Fatality in Eureka Apartment Fire

A tragic update on a fire broke out in an apartment on Fourth Street in Eureka, reveals the tragic deaths of two individuals from burns sustained in the January 3rd fire.

In a telephone interview with KMUD News, Talia Flores, the Community Risk Reduction Specialist and Public Information Officer for Humboldt Bay Fire, provided an update on the incident. “The two [people] that were rescued from inside the apartment were transported to St. Joseph’s and then flown to UC Davis for further care. They both succumbed to their injuries at UC Davis,” Flores said.

Flores expressed condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones, and clarified some misinformation that had been circulating. “There was a reference to us as the Eureka Fire Department, but we are Humboldt Bay Fire, and we were the only fire agency at this fire,” she stated. Flores also refuted the claim that firefighters were unable to rescue the victims, saying, “We did manage to get in there and rescue them and transfer care to St. Joseph’s and city ambulance.”

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing, and Flores encouraged anyone with information to contact the Eureka Police Department. Humboldt Bay Fire is committed to working with local authorities to determine the cause and ensure the safety of all residents.

Flores also emphasized the importance of smoke detectors as the “first line of defense” in a structure fire, providing early warning to occupants. For individuals who may have difficulty escaping a fire, Flores recommended notifying neighbors about their status, as this can help alert firefighters upon arrival. She also advised sleeping with doors closed, as this can significantly increase the chances of survival by limiting exposure to smoke and heat.

This tragic incident has left the community in mourning and rallying around the daughter of one of the victims. For those wanting additional information on the GoFundMe, click here.
