ALERTS; A coastal flood advisory ended at 11 am this morning. A wind advisory is in effect until 4 pm this afternoon. A flood watch has been issued for Friday, December 13th from 2pm until Saturday, December 14th at 3pm.
SYNOPSIS: Strong southerly winds will pick up today, with gusts over 45 mph expected along coastal areas and ridges in Mendocino County from late morning through evening. Rain is likely across the region, with heavy mountain snow starting at elevations around 3,000 feet. Low clouds and gusty conditions will make outdoor activities challenging.
TODAY:
Inland: Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 55. Windy, with a south southeast wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 24 to 29 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
Along the Coast: Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 57. Windy, with a south southeast wind 21 to 26 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
TONIGHT:
Inland: Rain before 4am, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 44. Breezy, with a southeast wind 16 to 21 mph decreasing to 8 to 13 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
Along the Coast: Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. Low around 44. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
Extended Forecast: The winter storm will intensify tonight, bringing heavy mountain snow into Saturday morning, with snow levels potentially dropping as low as 2,500 feet in northern Trinity County. Thunderstorms are possible early Saturday, especially along the coast. Precipitation will taper off by Saturday night, and Sunday is expected to be dry. Another round of rain, possibly up to an inch, is forecast for Monday before drier weather returns on Tuesday and Wednesday. Strong winds and occasional lightning make this a dynamic system to monitor.
