Extended Forecast: A weak shortwave* is moving into the Pacific Northwest, bringing scattered clouds and breezy conditions to higher terrain in interior Mendocino and Lake counties, while coastal areas see fog development under mostly clear skies. A warming and drying trend is expected Monday through Wednesday as a ridge builds in, with temperatures reaching the mid-80s to low 90s in inland valleys and low humidity raising fire weather concerns. Late Wednesday through Friday, a series of shortwaves will slightly cool temperatures and increase northerly winds, maintaining elevated fire risk. By the weekend, models suggest a return to warmer conditions as ridging persists over the Pacific Northwest.
*A shortwave in meteorology refers to a small-scale disturbance or ripple in the mid to upper levels of the atmosphere, often embedded within a larger flow pattern like a trough or ridge. These features typically move quickly and can influence local weather by enhancing rising motion in the atmosphere, which may lead to cloud formation, precipitation, or changes in wind patterns. In simpler terms, it’s like a small kink in the atmospheric flow that can temporarily affect the weather—bringing clouds, wind, or even storms depending on its strength and location.
