Thirty-five years ago, Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney were leaving the Bay Area, en route to Santa Cruz for a campus demonstration aimed at saving the redwoods. Little did they know their lives were about to be irreversibly changed.
In tonight’s edition of Public Affairs, we take a deep dive into the car bombing of Judi Bari—an event that shook the environmental movement and, 35 years later, still raises more questions than answers. The bombing occurred during a wave of resistance that became known as Redwood Summer, a season of bold demonstrations, tree sits, and escalating political tension that drew national attention.
Who bombed Judi Bari? It’s a question that continues to linger. This week marks three and a half decades since that pivotal day in Oakland. Bari, a Mendocino local, Earth First! organizer, and musician, was severely injured when a pipe bomb exploded beneath her seat. In the car with her was fellow activist Darryl Cherney, who walked away with minor injuries. Cherney joins us to recount his story in this special broadcast.
