Weather & Tides-May 28, 2025

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE REPORT

Wednesday,  May 28th  2025

SYNOPSIS: Warmer weather will continue through late week. Hot temperatures likely Friday and Saturday for the interior before a quick trend downward next week. Gusty winds possible this weekend and early next week.

In Humboldt and Mendocino Counties, grass pollen counts are high.

TODAY:

Inland: Sunny, with a high near 79. Calm wind becoming north northwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

Along the Coast: Partly sunny, with a high near 64. Calm wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon.

TONIGHT:

Inland: Partly cloudy, with a low around 50. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Along the Coast:  Patchy fog after 11pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. North northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Extended Forecast: High pressure has returned to the region, though a weak cutoff low near Southern California may bring isolated showers or lightning to Trinity County. A brief trough on Thursday could increase clouds with only minimal rain chances in far northern areas. A Rex Block,  a type of weather setup where a strong high-pressure system (which brings warm, dry, and calm weather) gets “stuck” next to a low-pressure system (which brings cooler, unsettled weather),  can block the normal west-to-east flow of weather systems, causing certain conditions—like heat or dryness—to linger longer than usual in one area. Think of it like a traffic jam in the atmosphere that keeps the same kind of weather in place for several days. This pattern sets up Friday and Saturday, leading to a significant early-season heat wave with widespread triple-digit temperatures and elevated HeatRisk. A sharp cooldown is expected late weekend into early next week as a potentially strong upper trough moves in, bringing cooler weather, a chance of precipitation, and strong northerly winds.
