Rooted in Community!

by Kara Randolph, Station Manager

Redwood Community Radio stands strong as a crucial media resource, uplifting diverse perspectives, informing you during emergencies, and serving our region through the generosity of our volunteers, members, community, and businesses. While national issues present insecurities and concerns, we find resilience and strength in our unique community. We proudly support our immigrant community, the LGBTQIA2S+ community, the disability community, and all of those affected by the new administration.

We are independent, free spirits and know how to think outside of the box. This creative resilience inspires KMUD and our radical rural neighbors to share skills, art, and ideas that deepen our community connections, building bridges toward a better future. KMUD continues to foster this connection by offering weekly live call-in shows, community announcements, innovative and diverse music, all hosted and engineered by community volunteers. _________

“I think the importance of doing activist work is precisely because it allows you to give back and to consider yourself not as a single individual who may have achieved whatever but to be a part of an ongoing historical movement.”

-Angela Davis

The First Descent by Sigur Björn, News Assisstant.

This summer 2025, a group of indigenous youth will ride the Klamath River from source to sea, the first event of its kind in over 100 years and now possible because of the removal of four dams on the river. “The First Descent” is a 30 day, 400 mile trek; a celebration of the freeing of the Klamath. KMUD spoke to Amada Lang from Rios to Rivers about this historical event, the dam removals and what comes next for the local, indigenous paddle clubs. The full interview is on KMUD.org See riostorivers.org and @riostorivers for more info on the First Descent and community events taking place during it.

KMUD News Updates by Lauren Schmitt, News Director

Last week, I received a number of calls and emails from concerned community members asking how President Donald Trump’s new executive order—aimed at ending federal funding for NPR and PBS—might impact Redwood Community Radio. In response to those questions and concerns, I’ve written a letter to the editor, which I’d like to share with you here. My letter to the editor made it into the Times-Standard and Redheaded Blackbelt, where you can shine in with your comments.

North Coast Congressman Jared Huffman did not mince words when asked to reflect on the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s second term. In an interview with KMUD News, Huffman described the administration as a “wrecking ball,” citing widespread disruption to the federal government, economic instability, and what he characterized as a dangerous shift away from democratic norm.

Jazz Fest Simulcast by Dorothee, Membership Coordinator

A huge thank you to WWOZ, our sister station in New Orleans, for the incredible gift of 8 days filled with Jazz and Celebration. It truly felt like we all went on a little vacation, soaking in the vibrant rhythms of New Orleans through their simulcast.

Many of our DJs here at KMUD are still under the spell of that New Orleans vibe, for example, behr’s Jazz Feast on May 7th, and Chanin’s Moon River Meandering Thursday May 8th and Mumzer’s It’s All About the Music this morning, kept that energy alive. It’s like coming back from vacation and trying to hold onto that special vibe just a little longer.

Our Program Director’s recommendation is Lila Downs, recorded at the Fais Do-Do Stage. You can catch it in the KMUD archives under Wild River Radio from April 27th.

Les Scher Jazz Scholarship by Dorothee, Membership Coordinator

KMUD is proud to announce that our very dear Julian Jackson, one of the hosts of Lester Leaps In, which carries on Les Scher’s long musical legacy at KMUD, won it this year. Read Julian’s writing about Jazz here

Underwriter highlight: Gyppo by Patricia Tinkler, Underwriting Coordinator
Recently celebrating their 7th anniversary, Gyppo Ale Mill has established a vibrant anchor in the Shelter Cove community. Owner-Operator Julie Peacock has created the quintessential third space, a family-friendly pub and dining room which features a beautiful outdoor patio complete with a fire ring, a converted Airstream (affectionately called the BEERstream), and killer ocean views.
The food menu evolves seasonally, but beloved staples include the fresh local rockfish and chips, loaded truffle fries, and beer mac and cheese. It’s all good, honestly, but the focal point is, of course, the beer.
Current beer offerings cross the spectrum, and their commitment to sustainability brings you ingredients from local heroes like French Ranch Farms and Admiral Malting. Head Brewer, Jared Smith, has a continuous rotation of delicious and quaffable beers, a dozen on tap in the restaurant at any time.
If you can’t make it out to Shelter Cove, Gyppo’s beer is available locally in other restaurants or retail locations. Here’s Gyppo’s handy dandy beer finder
Look for Gyppo Ale Mill at SoHum Pride!  Julie and her husband and co-owner, Josh Monschke, generously donated kegs, and have for many of our events over the past seven years. They’ve also co-branded with us on our new aluminum cups for the KMUD Block Party on May 17th.
