Live on KMUD
by Dennis Maher, Program Director

Lots of fantastic live music has been coming out of our Studio B lately!  We had an amazing vocal and guitar duo, based in Tahoe, stopping by on Friday Nov 24th as they gigged their way through Humboldt. The Imposters were live on It’s All About The Music with Mumzer. Find them on our archive and @theimposterstahoe on Facebook.
Some of the shows were filmed by Javi, you can watch the videos in the salmon color links below. You can also find
@kmudradio on instagram and facebook for more live and videos.  On Wednesday, Nov 29th the

Garberville Town Band pressed in wall to wall gave us a great show on The Vinyl Frontier w/ Eddie.  Later on that day, all the way from Canada, a spectacular acoustic appearance by Petunia and the Vipers on The Jazz Feast w/ Jimmy.
The
Blueberry Hill Boogie Band got down on Moonriver Meandering w/ Chanin Thursday December 1.  We had Steve Carvahlo solo with guitar and vocal on Monday, the 7th during Rock On!
On Wednesday 6th, we were blessed with fantastic harmonizers and multi-instrumentalists collectively known as the
J Street Regulars. James Zeller, Katie Belnap, and Daniel Nickerson crooned on The Jazz Feast w/ behr.
I had the great pleasure of backing up
the amazing Mumzer and Rob McKee for a blues set on It’s All About The Music Friday Dec 8th and later on that day a spectacular and intimate performance was given by Emily Totten on Musical Possibilities w/ Kim. Just before the end of the show, local Shane Gref walked by the station and poked his head in on the show to see if he too could play live on the radio, we said sure, and a surprising live happened.
On Monday the 11th
Intergalactic Trash was alight on Rock On! w/ J.J. Burner.

Amazing live moments we shared. If you missed any of it you can hear the music shows in our archive where they last for two weeks, and longer lasting highlights of those shows are posted in our archive on December 2nd and 9th on the Rewind! show which airs on Saturday mornings at 2am. You can also watch those live sessions on our Youtube channel. And please consider subscribing, as we are planning to post videos more often now.

End of the Year Drive
by Dorothee, Membership Coordinator

What a Drive! I feel so fortunate for the abundance flowing towards KMUD. We got it all : some wonderful volunteers that make the life of the station and the incredible shows all day and night long; a persimmon tree feeding us with its sweet delights; some great hoodies made by our partner “Mattole River Studios”, 22 new members and about $32,000 already in. Thanks to all of you listeners who pitched in and specially our very special friend who donated $10,000.
Our goal for this Drive was $35,000, so we will get back in Drive vibe this Thursday and Friday for the last $3,000 needed. Tune in for a Drive Blast and donate to KMUD!

Lakota People’s Law ProjectRecently, Kmud newsroom has taken over the public affairs department.
Did you know reporter and News Director Lauren Schmitt became involved in journalism due to the circumstances that would take off in 2016, including the rise of fascism and the Standing Rock movement against the Dakota Access Pipeline? On the December 12th edition of Kmud Public Affairs, Lauren Schmitt checked in with the Lakota People’s Law Project, who shared this update and action alert from Standing Rock. Program Selection and Review Council
by B’anna, PSRC member

We are looking for a few more members to join KMUD’s PROGRAM SELECTION AND REVIEW COUNCIL (PSRC).  Are you a regular KMUD listener? Do you have valuable input about the programs aired, noticing what is wonderful and where there may be room for improvement?
The PSRC is responsible for making recommendations for program changes to the programming staff. Audience complaints and input are also forwarded to PSRC for review. The PSRC is a committee which meets one day per month, usually on the first Friday at 11am. The meetings occur over Zoom and average between one to two hours. If interested, applicants can write the Program Director at [email protected].
It takes a village to maintain KMUD’s top notch programming!

How do you prepare your show ?
Joshua Golden,
Politically Correct Week in Review
The Politically Correct Week in Review has been around ever since Kmud started. Paul Encimer started it with various friends and they had the idea of a satirical take on the news with some laughter and historical references. In the last decade or so, when Paul was doing it with Tom O’Neil, what would happen is they were both avid Newsies, so they would convene in the afternoon before the show, Tom would have a big strong couple of espressos, Paul would have a joint and they’d be talking, bringing up the show banter.
Now that I’m doing it with Charley Custer, basically, the weekend before the show, I’ll be taking particular notes referencing stuff, and reviewing notes I’ve made earlier in the month. And I send Charley a little list of what’s on the top of my mind, Monday morning, and then he has some comments. And we don’t really meet because he’s over there and I’m over here. And nowadays the zoom thing is happening.
My sources… well… I’ve been listening to NPR news broadcasts since they started in the 70s, it’s kind of taking the pulse of the mainstream middle class, because NPR has definitely changed and mutated and has a milder approach and less staff, and they got de-funded as well. So that’s one flavor. PBS news hours, always a good place to get a little commentary and analysis of what people are thinking. Again, taking the pulse. And then the internet, of course, has become like a wire service, you know, just following the rabbit hole, to the primary source. We are trying to take an editorial stance that remains open minded. Even if it’s sort of good cause, if you’re not saying everything that’s happening, you’re kind of hiding something else. And we try to be open minded about things. But it’s really tough these days.”

Listen to Politically Correct Week in Review every other Monday from 7 to 8pm.

ED Denson Law Office
by Patricia Tinkler, Underwriting & Traffic Coordinator

When asked by a colleague to spotlight ED Denson as featured underwriter, I wasn’t particularly enthused. How do you condense such an over-sized life into a meme-sized newsletter blurb? Short answer: ya don’t!

There’s a daunting amount of press related to ED’s work in the cannabis community; for heaven’s sake, the man’s got his own Wikipedia page. Here’s the section about his legal career:

In 1995, he enrolled in William Howard Taft University’s Taft Law School, a distance learning institution, from which he graduated in January 1999. He passed the California Bar Exam that month and in August 1999 was sworn in as an attorney. His practice for the first 16 years had been focused on defense of people charged with marijuana crimes or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He has also represented, pro bono, activists arrested during protests of logging practices in the old-growth redwoods and, more recently, protesting the environmental impacts of the Willits bypass construction on US Highway 101. He has given public lectures on California’s medical marijuana law to patients and their caregivers, and for CalNORML; and hosts a monthly hour-long talk show on the topic on KMUD, a community radio station in Humboldt County, California. In 2006, he went to China as part of a Global Volunteers program and gave lectures on the American legal system to university students in Xi’an. In 2016, as cannabis law changed, relatively few cannabis arrests were made locally, and his law practice shifted from primarily criminal defense to counseling people who wanted Commercial Cannabis Cultivation permits under the Humboldt county ordinance. Perhaps 70-75 of his clients beat the December 31, 2016 deadline for applications to be filed. In 2017, he and Fred Fletcher filed a suit against Humboldt County alleging illegal changes to the county’s marijuana tax law. The Court of Appeals ruled in their favor in 2020.

His work with the Civil Liberties Monitoring Project is legendary and his recent success on behalf of growers is the icing on his legal career. KMUD is proud and honored to have ED as an underwriter and a programmer.

ED can be reached at (707)923-4764 or by email at [email protected]
